1 year post-op RPAO

A year ago today, I woke up in a plush hotel that overlooked Commencement Bay in Tacoma, Washington. My mom and I took an early morning walk in the misty weather and picked up giant, brightly colored fall leaves from the ground.

A few hours later, my pelvis was cut open for my second surgery in seven months.

It seems like much longer than a year since that day. My initial recovery was smooth, and though it was not easy going through the long process, I'm so glad I did.

Happy to report I can:
  • Walk, run, do squats, lunges, with no pain in the joint, no matter how hard I work it. (And I've been working it pretty hard.) No limp or sign of dysplasia/surgery.
  • Sleep on my side all night.
  • Feel a larger percentage of my thigh (85 percent), though with a tingly sensation.
Wishing these things get better:
  • Strong burning sensation that remains on the very front of the hip when lifting my leg, aka my "Captain Morgan" position. I still have to lift my leg with my hand to avoid pain when getting dressed, putting shoes on, etc. The strength is there, but it burns in that muscle a lot.
  • Range of motion about 85 percent of what it was pre-surgery.
  • Tailbone, which is a disaster.
  • Appearance of the scar, which is fading but still noticeable.
  • Deep random stabbing/itching sensation every once in a while, which must be from the nerves still recovering.
I'm not as happy with the outcome of the right side as I am with the left, but overall I can't complain ... I can hunt for leaves all day long if I want to now. :)

WOW....squats and lunges!!!! I'm jealous..... I can't do them very well....but that just may be because I am not in as good shape as you...and nothing to do with my hip!!! :)

Do you know of any PAO surgeons in CO?

I'm in CO Springs for the holidays and have had a complication pop up for which I may need some local advice, preferably from a PAO surgeon.

Thanks for any referrals you can give.

Hey Matt,

In my research, I only found one doctor in CO who had PAO experience, and I can't remember his name! I believe his first name was Ernie, but I'm not sure. He's in Denver, and I tried looking him up but didn't find anything. I'll keep trying and let you know.

I have been doing my follow-ups with Dr. Herbert Thomas in Englewood. He doesn't do PAOs but is a colleague of my surgeon's. I really liked him. (303) 789-2663

I'm sorry about your complication. Good luck, and I'll post again if I can remember the dr.'s name or clinic.

I still have bad dreams about having hip surgeries. It's been nine years since I went under the knife. The surgeries seem far from mind – I don't have daily pain, I don't talk about hip dysplasia, and when I get undressed, I rarely notice the thin white scars on either side of my hips. When I do think about it all, gratitude and pride overwhelm me. I think of my recovery and wonderful life that has followed. It's strange then, that my brain sums up this life-changing event with disturbing scenes from an operating room, flooding me with anxiety and reminding me of the unpleasant parts of PAOs. But maybe the nightmares have some value, after all. Being reminded of the stress and pain and work that went into fixing my hips also reminds me of how strong I was to get through it. Never forget.

Out of surgery

This is Cassie's Mom, after trying to connect to the internet unsuccessfully several times in her room, we have decided that Cassie will dictate to me and I'll try to keep you updated by taking the computer elsewhere in the building where there is a strong enough signal. Cassie's surgery took 5 1/2 hours this time, and Dr. Mayo said it went very well. He did find a cyst in the joint, in the same place as the left one...a matching set! He said that was kind of strange. She woke up in a lot of pain and Dr. Mayo said it took some time to get it under control, fortunately she did not remember much of that! She was out of recovery just 1 1/2 hours later and after a breathing treatment; into a room by 9:30, a little nauseas, and with a very dry throat. She kicked me out a little after midnight, and I took a cab to the hotel, since my carriage had turned back into a pumpkin. 4 years post-op LPAO

It's been four years since my left hip surgery, the day-long event that became a years-long cornucopia for which I am eternally thankful. My thanks does not wane, even though the periods of pain-free living have started to. Between anniversaries three and four, I have to admit that life has been a little tougher. My hips hurt more often and are less willing to take the beatings an active lifestyle evokes. My mind returns to dark places of my past, when pain ruled and I couldn't count on my body. The most challenging aspect is not letting fears and negative thoughts squash the positive feelings and abilities my new hips gave me. Post-surgery pains are completely different than pre-surgery's. Sporadic, unpredictable and in places I didn't think even counted as "hip pain." Post-surgery pains also have been easier to control, just harder to understand.
